2004 Annual Dinner and
Awards Ceremony

The Inaugural Dinner and Awards Ceremony of the Hereditary Society Community of the United States of America was held on April 18, 2004 at the Washington Club, Washington, D.C.  Guest were greeted by ladies and gentlemen of the Advisory Council upon arrival, where they enjoyed a Reception and Cocktails between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. 

At 7:00pm, guests were seated and welcomed by Mrs. Brantley Carter Bolling Knowles.  Eighty-six guests were in attendance. Mrs. Knowles also thanked Mrs. Eleanor Warrene Smallwood Beasley Niebell, a life member of the Washington Club, for her kindness in sponsoring the event.  The Rev. Dr. Albert Clinton Walling, II gave the blessing and dinner was served.

For dinner, guests enjoyed an excellent menu, which included Roasted Garlic Tomato Soup; Spinach and Orange Salad; Poulet Sauteed aux Parmesan; and Haricots Verts and Petit Carrots Risotto.  Red and white wine was served with dinner, which was followed by a dessert of Tiramiso with Kahlua Liqueur.

Present that evening in her role as an Honorary Advisor of the Council, was Mrs. Linda Tinker Watkins, President General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mr. Charles Owen Johnson introduced the members of the head table, and shared his unique and personal perspective on each Advisor present.  Mrs. Niebell then introduced the family of Honorary Member, Grahame Thomas Smallwood, Jr.  The Rev. Barry Christopher Howard introduced Ms. Caroline Bowen, granddaughter of Honorary Member, Mrs. Harry Clark Boden, IV and her guest Lorrie Smythe; and Mr. Frederick Ira Ordway, III, son of Honorary Member, Col. Frederick Ira Ordway, Jr., and Mr. Ordway's wife, Mrs. Maruja Ordway. 

The Rev. Howard then introduced Mr. Timothy Field Beard.  Mr. Beard shared on 'The Impact of Information Technology on the Field of Genealogical Study'.  Following Mr. Beard's presentation, The Rev. Howard shared the history of the HSC project, as well as an overview of its structure, purposes, and future goals.  Following a short break, guests enjoyed a visual presentation of the site in its entirety.  Following the overview of the website, a brief presentation on the life of Mr. Grahame Thomas Smallwood, Jr., was a highlight of the evening.

Col. Stewart Boone McCarty, Jr. initiated the Awards Ceremony by giving a brief overview of the nature of the Honorary Member Awards.  Following Col. McCarty's introduction, Mr. John Hallberg Jones introduced each Honorary Member for the Classes of 2003 and 2004, and each was awarded Honorary Membership respectively.

Following the Awards Ceremony, The Rev. Howard made final comments and Dr. Walling gave the benediction.  The evening was an enjoyable time of fellowship, honor and celebration.
